Nick Cadena was a Fire Captain with the California Department of Forestry for 24 years. In December 2006, Nick retired after 5 ½ years as a Fire Service Training Specialist from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He holds California State Fire Training Certifications for Fire Officer, Fire Prevention Officer I, II, and Fire Instructor I, II, III. Nick is a CSTI Certified Hazardous Materials Instructor. In addition to his career in the California fire service, Nick is an American Red Cross instructor and was a Co-Coordinator at the College of the Desert, Public Safety Fire Academy.

HazMat I/C  -Day 2

Instructor:  Nick Cadena
Maximum class size is 25 students

Course Objectives:To provide participants with the capability to assume the role of Incident Commander, as defined in the OSHA Hazwoper regulation, during an emergency response to an actual or potential hazardous materials release.

Required by OSHA Hazwoper regulation, IC training required for anyone who will assume control of the incident scene beyond the first responder awareness level.

The 16-hour course will cover
Day 1:
Course overview; Hazmat Laws. Regulations & Plans; ICS, Team Typing & Response Resources;
Hazard Assessment; Hazard Assessment Exercises; Hazard Assessment (continued); Review of Day 1.

Day 2:
Hazmat Site Safety; Operational Risk Management; Tabletop Exercise: Scenario 1; Protective Actions; Tabletop Exercise: Scenario 2; Incident Termination; Tabletop Exercise: Incident Debrief; Final Review; Written Exam; Course Review & Graduation

Attendees must provide the following:

▪▪ Attendees must show proof they have completed the OSHA Hazardous Materials First Responders Operations (FRO) by providing a signed hard copy of Certificate to the instructor at the beginning of the class.

▪▪ Must bring a copy of the 2020 Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG)

▪▪ Download a copy of the student manual  (Need Link)

▪▪ A laptop, tablet, or smart device w/power supply

▪▪ Students will be required to sign-in to the class each day

▪▪ Participants will be a given a written examination at the conclusion of the class and must have a passing score at least 70%.
